3 Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (S.I.D.S)
The sudden, unexplained death of an infant under one year of age 90% of SIDS deaths occur before six months While it occurs very rarely, according to statistics, SIDS is still the leading cause of death in the first year

4 Reducing the Risk of SIDS
Always place baby on his or her back to sleep at nighttime and daytime Provide a smoke free environment Place your baby to sleep in a crib next to the adult’s bed for the first six months

5 Reducing the Risk of SIDS
Provide a safe crib environment that has no toys or loose bedding Don’t overheat baby Offer a pacifier during naps and bedtime Breastfeed baby

6 Crying It is a baby’s only real way to communicate their needs and feelings There are times when the most caring parent cannot soothe a baby’s cries Crying increases at about 2 weeks, peaks at months, declines by 5 months

7 PURPLE Crying P- peak of crying U- unexpected crying
R- resists soothing P- pain like face L- long lasting crying E- evening

8 Shaken Baby Syndrome Term used to describe what may happen when you shake a baby The long-term effects of shaken baby syndrome are: Brain damage Blindness Deafness -Vegetative state Paralysis 25-30% of shaken babies die Crying 1:13 min Shaken 1:30 min

9 Car Seat Safety Babies have weak neck and back muscles that need extra support when traveling in a vehicle A rear-facing infant seat will support your baby’s head and neck in a sudden stop or crash Be sure you use a rear-facing infant seat that fits your baby’s weight and height

10 Car Seat Safety Use it correctly: in the rear-facing position; in the back seat; and every time your baby rides in the car Rear-facing infant seats are available as: infant-only seats, infant/child seats, or infant/child booster seats

11 Protect Your Baby Follow manufacturer’s safety instructions
Register all new equipment for recall notice Check all equipment (even at grandparent’s and babysitter’s house) If you do buy items second-hand, make sure you know it’s history and get the owner’s manual

12 Be Safe at Home The Key is to Supervise children!!!
It’s important to consider a child’s surroundings – are they safe? Most injuries that occur at home are preventable Babies should never be left unattended when on a bed, sofa or change table (not even for a moment) Baby Safety at Home 6:20 min

20 Overall Injury Prevention
Research indicates that consistent adult supervision is the best way to prevent the accidental injury of young children Parents and caregivers need to adjust their thinking in regards to the commonly held belief that childhood injuries are just ‘accidents’ Studies show that there is an increase in frequency of injury in young children who are being supervised by an older sibling
