1 Domains and Kingdoms Ch. 19 Sect. 1

2 3 Domains of Life Domain Bacteria Domain Archea Domain Eukarya
thought to be the oldest composed of the kingdom Eubacteria Domain Archea composed of the kingdom Archaebacteria Domain Eukarya composed of 4 kingdoms: Kingdom Protista Kingdom Fungi Kingdom Plantae Kingdom Animalia

4 The Three Domains of Life

5

6 Kingdom Eubacteria Characteristics: coccus bacillius spirillum
Prokaryotic (no nucleus) Unicellular Have strong cell walls made of peptidoglycan Amino acid sequences are very different from archaebacteria and eukaryotes May be photosynthetic or heterotrophic (can’t make own food) Found in every environment on Earth Some cause disease Some are used to process food Others used to control pests, perform genetic engineering coccus bacillius cyanobacteria spirillum

7 Kingdom Archaebacteria
Characteristics: Prokaryotic Unicellular Cell walls do not contain peptidoglycan Proteins are similar to eukaryotes but not eubacteria Methanogens Obtain energy from H2 and CO2 to form methane (CH4) Live deep in mud swamps and are poisoned by oxygen Extremophiles Thermophiles live in very hot places (up to 106°C = 228°F) Halophiles live in very salty lakes Others live in very acidic environments Nonextreme Archaebacteria Live in same environments as eubacteria

8 Kingdom Protista Characteristics: Eukaryotic (have nucleus)
Mostly unicellular but some multicellular May be autotrophic or heterotrophic Some have cell walls Many move by flagella, cilia or pseudopods Reproduce asexually Mostly aquatic (live in freshwater and saltwater environments)

9 Kingdom Fungi Characteristics: Eukaryotic Multicellular Heterotrophic
except yeasts = unicellular Heterotrophic Cells walls made of chitin Asexual and sexual reproduction Don’t move from place to place Many live on dead organisms Others are parasites Include mushrooms, molds, and yeasts

10 Kingdom Plantae Chracteristics: Eukaryotic Multicellular
Photosynthetic Don’t move from placeto place Plants cover every part of the earth except the polar regions and highest mountaintops Have specialized cells Cell walls composed of cellulose

11 Kingdom Animalia Characteristics: Eukaryotic Multicellular
Heterotrophic No cell walls Capable of movement Found in many different environments Invertebrates and vertebrates Mostly sexual reproduction
