Last week my principal brought a new Syrian refugee into my class. I was informed that the boy had post-traumatic stress disorder due to witnessing his father’s kidnapping; the boy was also there when the militants returned the body, riddled with nails (teacher in MEd program, 2016).

4. Refugee Crises and Global Inclusion: Arts-based, Emergent Cultural Voices in a Canadian Classroom
In 2016, Canada accepted 39,000 refugees from Syria alone from Nov Feb (#Welcome Refugees, 2017).
Issues of pre-immigration and resettlement may include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety for refugee students in Canadian schools (Lindencrona et al, 2008).

Syrian refugee students with emotional and language challenges join homogenous, inclusive groups for arts- based action inquiry. A hip-hop project invites experimentation, innovation, and improvisation around individual and group cultural voicing.
