Objective: Discuss how a change in transportation helped South Carolina’s economy.

7 The Invention of Cars The first cars were built in the early l800s. Wealthy people, like doctors, bought them. At first, many roads were not good for the cars, because they were made out of dirt. Guess what happens to the dirt when it rains? Guess what happens to the car? Eventually many roads were paved to allow for easy traveling. Many people could not drive their cars when it was raining, because most cars did not have a roof or windshield.

Question 1 Because of the invention of cars, People began traveling more. People were able to move more quickly across the state.

16 Establishing More Railroads
Trains and railroads were built to move goods or people across the state and country at a faster pace. Many farmers put their crops, such as peaches and cotton, on trains and sent these goods to the market. Many railroads were connected to textile mills. Some of the cotton would be sent by train to the textile mills where fabrics were made.

Question 2 Because more railroads were established, Goods could be sold around the United States. Farmers could make more money from their cash crops. People and goods were able to move more quickly across the state.
