L'Aquila is a city and commune in Southern Italy
capital city of the Abruzzo region and of the Province of L'Aquila
70,967 inhabitants.

3. Causes of Earthquakes
The L'Aquila earthquake was caused by the African Plate colliding with the Eurasian Plate.
The opening of the Tyrrhenian Basin which caused a rupture along a normal fault in the central Apennine Mountains also contributed to the earthquake.
Foreshock and Aftershock
Epicentre was near L'Aquila, which is the capital of Abruzzo. Felt 92km away in Rome.

4. Primary and secondary effect
Primary effects
300 people died.
buildings were damaged or destroyed(around tens of thousands).
Over 60,000 people were made homeless.
Secondary effects
Fires started in some collapsed buildings caused more damage.
Electricity and phone services were interrupted.
The broken water pipe caused a landslide.

5. Short and long term responses
Short term responses
Camps were set up for the people that were made homeless.
Ambulances, fire engines and the army were sent in to rescue survivors.
Cranes and diggers were used to remove rubble.
Long term responses
New settlements were built to accommodate over 20,000 residents.
Most area was to be rebuilt.
There was an investigation set up to find out why the new modern buildings weren't built to withstand earthquakes.

The total cost of the earthquake was extremely big and devastated the region.
