Kofi Annan Kofi Annan of Ghana, was Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was first elected in 1997, serving a five-year term. His second five-year term started in 2002. As Secretary-General, Mr. Annan led the organization’s goal of keeping peace and security around the world, fighting for human rights, and, in his words, by “bringing the United Nations closer to the people.” Internationally, he is taking a leading role in working internationally to fight HIV/AIDS, and the threat of terrorism around the globe.
