1 NU3S01 Research for Nursing Practice
Tutorials 2013/2014 21/11/2018

2 Tutorials NU3S01 The aim of these tutorials is to support lecture material, your own reading and clinical practice in both considering a topic for your annotated bibliography and to assist you to achieve the module learning outcomes. Please note, if students do not have the preparatory work, the tutorial may not go ahead. 21/11/2018

3 List of Tutorials . *Tutorial 1: CINAHL database.
* Tutorial 2: Clarifying the Assignment requirements and deciding on the topic/problem. Tutorial 3: refining the “problem” Tutorial 4: Peer review- article summary analysis. Tutorial 5 : Peer review - article summary critique. * These two tutorials are interchangeable i.e. tutorial 2 may come first for some groups. 21/11/2018

4 Related Module Learning Outcomes
Identify an issue or problem from clinical practice and explain or justify its significance. Identify & access appropriate bibliographical resources and other sources of relevant information including web-based resources and data bases. Assess the reliability, reputation, authenticity, integrity and relevance of sources. Analyse and evaluate the findings of research studies. Understand how their own behaviours impact on others when working in & contributing to the success of formal & informal teams. Listen actively to their peers and give and receive constructive feedback on their work individually and in small groups. 21/11/2018 4

5 Tutorial 1: CINAHL database.
21/11/2018 5

6 Tutorial Related Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session the student will be able to: Identify & access appropriate bibliographical resources and other sources of relevant information including web-based resources and data bases. 21/11/2018 6

7 Tutorial 2 : Clarifying the assignment requirements and deciding on a research topic and associated problem. 21/11/2018

8 Tutorial 2: Related Learning Outcomes
By the end of this session you should be able to: Identify an issue or problem from clinical practice that interests you Situate the issue or problem within the School’s Research Matrix Explain your interest in the problem or issue Begin to explain why the issue or problem is important and therefore worth exploring Begin to explain the relevance of the issue or problem to a) Nursing and/or b) Healthcare 21/11/2018 8

9 Thinking of an issue or problem from practice
Think about... Something you’ve seen in clinical practice that interests you. Questions that you have about practice. Areas of practice that you think could be improved. 21/11/2018 School of Nursing and Midwifery 24 D'Olier Street Dublin 2

10 Individual Activity: Free Writing
Use these prompts to write about an issue or problem from practice: The problem or issue is Where did it happen.... When did it happen.... Who was involved.... I am interested in the problem/issue because.... It is an important problem because.... It is relevant to nursing or healthcare because.... Get students to keep writing for 10 minutes. If they are blocked they should repeat the word they have written and continue. The purpose is to get them writing and thinking and to help them to begin to really think about the problem, to clarify it in their own minds. 21/11/2018 School of Nursing and Midwifery 24 D'Olier Street Dublin 2

11 School Research Matrix
21/11/2018

12 Group Activity: Peer Review
Select a “buddy” to give and receive feedback. Use the previous activity to explain your problem / issue to your buddy. Feedback prompts for buddies Is the problem /issue clear? Is your buddy’s interest in the problem clear? Is it relevant to patient care, nursing? Where does it fit within the School Research Matrix? Feedback to the larger group summarizing: Topics/problems Current challenges The way forward-the next step. 21/11/2018 12

13 Tutorial 2. Related Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this tutorial you should have: Identified an issue or problem from clinical practice that interests you Situated the issue or problem within the School’s Research Matrix Explained your interest in the problem or issue Begun to explain why the issue or problem is important and therefore worth exploring Begun to explain the relevance of the issue or problem to a) Nursing and/or b) Healthcare 21/11/2018 13

14 Tutorial 3: Refining the problem.
21/11/2018

15 Activity Take the problem that you described in tutorial 1 and explain it to your buddy. Your Buddy will ascertain the extent to which your work so far complies with what is required of a “problem” Try at this point then to turn the research problem it into a research question. Please note, if students do not have the preparatory work, the tutorial may not go ahead. 21/11/2018

16 Consider the guidelines for developing the problem ( in assignment guidelines)
Stage 1. a) Describe an issue or problem from practice related to your chosen topic Stage 2.   a) Why is this issue or problem important and therefore worth exploring? What is the relevance of this issue or problem to:   Nursing or Practice or Healthcare Stage 3.  a) Refine your issue or problem into a question or statement which can be studied. 21/11/2018

17 Group Activity: Peer Review
Select a “buddy” to give and receive feedback. Use the previous activity to explain your problem / issue to your buddy. Feedback prompts for buddies Is the problem “active”? ( not “stigma”, rather patients experience stigma when… there is something “going on” with the problem Does the problems have an impact? Does the problem have these two key features: The current state differs from the ideal state and there is no obvious solution Is a clear/concise research question emerging? Feedback to the larger group summarizing: Topics/problems Current challenges The way forward-the next step. 21/11/2018 17

18 Tutorial Related Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session the student will be able to: Use a topic or area of interest from the School Research Matrix as the starting point for identification of an issue or problem from clinical practice which you would like to research. Analyse the issue or problem and justify its significance Turn the problem or issue into a researchable question 21/11/2018 18

19 NU3S03 – Tutorial 4

20 At the end of the session you will;
Understand how your own behaviours impact on others when working in & contributing to the success of formal & informal teams. Listened actively to your peers and give and receive constructive feedback on your work individually and in small groups. Presented a Summary Table (attached) of 1 of the research articles identified for inclusion in your annotated bibliography Written a 300 word (approx) summary of the research study in your own words and using the Summary Template provided.

21 Activity Guidelines In groups of two (15 minutes):
Each student presents the written summary of their chosen research study to a colleague. Each provides feedback to the other regarding their understanding of the presented summary. Larger group discussion regarding issues identified in the process. Discussion of the way forward e.g. what will you do to rectify any issues?

22 SummaryTemplate Background. Aim. Design. Setting & Participants.
Methods. Proposed Outcomes.

23 NU3S03 - Summary Table for Research Literature included in Review
Reference Title Study Aims & Objectives Research Design Sample Data collection methods Findings relevant to the review.

24 Tutorial 4: Peer review- article summaries.
21/11/2018

25 Tutorial Related Learning Outcomes
At the end of this session the student will be able to: Analyse and evaluate the findings of research studies. Understand how their own behaviours impact on others when working in & contributing to the success of formal & informal teams. Listen actively to their peers and give and receive constructive feedback on their work individually and in small groups. 21/11/2018 25

26 Activity Guidelines In groups of two (15 minutes):
Each student attempts presents their final summary of their paper. Each student considers whether they understand each others summary; whether it is relevant to practice and contains enough information. Feedback these findings to the larger group summarizing: Overall impact of the summary. Any issues with clarity and meaning of the presentation? Any omissions? The way forward-the next step what will you do to rectify any issues? 21/11/2018 26

27 Tutorial 5: Peer review - article summary critique
21/11/2018

Listen actively to their peers and give and receive constructive feedback on their work individually and in small groups. 21/11/2018 28

29 Preparation for this tutorial
Select one research article related to this assignment. Read through the article and identify the most suitable critique framework. Using this critique framework, work through the paper analysing and identifying each relevant item. Write out your findings. Take these to the tutorial. 21/11/2018

30 Activity Guidelines In groups of two (15 minutes):
Each student attempts to describe 3 aspects of their chosen paper using an critically analytical approach. Each student considers whether they consider there to be any issues with any of these 3 phases of the research process. Qualifications of author/place/abstract not necessary to discuss unless relevant to the critique. Feedback these findings to the larger group summarizing: The overall approach of the study. Issues with methodology. The way forward-the next step what will you do to support your views? 21/11/2018 30
