2. Structure:
Length helps to create an effect beyond the basic understanding of the written word.
What other elements in structure could have this effect?
Rhyme scheme
The number of stanzas and lines

3. Structure: In poetry we study: “stanzas” in stead of “paragraphs”.
“lines” instead of “Sentences”
*However, poems do contain sentences!

4. Enjambment:
Enjambment occurs when a sentence runs over 2 or more lines within a stanza.
We identify this by the lack of punctuation at the end of some lines.
Enjambment creates an informal tone in poetry.
Note the example in your poetry pack!

5. Enjambment: I am the speeding Spark of light Flung by God
From the forge of Chaos. (end of one sentence)
I soar on wings
Swifter than wind
Above the paths
Of the pulsing stars. (end of the second sentence)

6. Metaphors, symbols and imagery:
Alliteration: The repetition of a consonant sound.
E.g.: “A little light helps us live.”
Assonance: The repetition of a vowel sound.
E.g.: “The crumbling of thunder…”

7. Metaphors, symbols and imagery:
Onomatopoeia: Words that sounds like its meaning.
E.g.: “Bang”
Personification: Giving inanimate or non-living objects human qualities.
E.g.: “The dog thought to himself…”
Simile: A direct comparison using “like” or “as”.
E.g.: “The girl danced like the flames of a fire on a winter’s night.”
Metaphor: An indirect comparison between two objects/things.
E.g.: “The sea is a hungry dog.”

9. Rhythm: A pattern in which a poem is designed to be read.
The word rhythm is derived from rhythmos (Greek) which means, “measured motion.”
Think of the tune to your favourite song.

10. Rhyme:
The correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry.
There are various types of rhyme schemes. Can you name a few?
