1 ETF Emulsion/Residue Testing Program
Mike Anderson AASHTO TSP•2 – Emulsion Task Force (ETF) Meeting Warner Babcock Institute (WBI) for Green Chemistry Wilmington, MA November 29-30, 2017

2 2017 ETF Testing Program The principal goals of the program are to:
Determine appropriate procedures to be used for high and low temperature rheological properties Determine the need for long-term aging Evaluate procedures intended to ensure the quality of polymer modification without excluding good performers

3 2017 ETF Testing Program Scope
Coordinate Sampling, Shipment, and Testing for Plant- Produced Emulsions Approximately 25 total samples with geographic diversity within the United States Samples to primarily include CRS, CRS-2P (SBS), CRS-2L (SBR Latex), and HFRS-2P emulsions A maximum of 3 samples of HFRS-2P (or other high float emulsion) will be chosen

4 2017 ETF Testing Program Scope
Coordinate Testing Program for Plant-Produced Emulsions Husky (Jen Penner) MTE Services (Andrew Hanz) Paragon Technical Services (Codrin Daranga) Other Labs as available Collate and Analyze Data from Residue Rheological Testing Program Compile data from participating labs and compare grades based on SPG and EPG systems. Compare: 4-mm DSR results to 8-mm DSR and BBR results; High temperature grading using G*/sin δ and Jnr; PAV-aged results with results obtained with no aging.

5 2017 ETF Testing Program Scope
Provide assistance to the ETF, based on the analyzed data, on the grading of polymer modified emulsions and polymer identification Evaluate and recommend modifications to AASHTO Test procedures Work with ETF to develop the framework for implementation of Performance-Related Specifications for chip seal residues
