Simple sentence Contains 1 independent clause (subject and verb or verb phrase) Ex. I kicked the ball. (subject is I, verb is kicked, verb phrase is kicked the ball.

Compound sentence Contains at least 2 independent clauses (two subjects and two verbs). These clauses re joined together by a conjunction or semi colon. Ex. I kicked the ball and it hit Bakari.

Complex sentence Contains a subordinate clause (sometimes called a dependent clause) and an independent clause. A subordinate clause has a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought. Ex. After kicking the ball over the fence, the teacher called the game over. Ex. I was happy, even though I didn’t make much money.

Compound-complex sentence
Is a mix of compound and complex. It has two independent clauses (subjects and verbs) and one dependent/subordinate clause. Ex. Bakari cried because the ball hit him in the face and I apologized immediately.

Compound-complex Ex. I’m happy, even though I don’t make much money, but my kids are always complaining since we can’t afford to buy the newest toys.
