1
Changes on the Earth’s Surface
2
Weathering is breaking down of rock into smaller and smaller pieces.
Mechanical weathering produces boulders, stone, pebble, sand, silt, dust Forms soil Caused by water freezing in the cracks of a rock, or plants growing in a rock
3
Weathering by ice Niche weathering Grand Tetons, Wyoming
4
Mechanical Weathering 1:01min
5
Weathering of ice in Greenland.
7
Vegetation protects the soil from erosion
Vegetation protects the soil from erosion. Tropical rainforests are especially vulnerable to erosion when the land is cleared. Leaching of soil
8
What would cause weathering at the top of the cliff?
What is it called when the rock is washed away? Mechanical weathering; water erosion
9
Daily heating and cooling can cause rocks to break into sheets.
Mechanical weathering
10
2. What type of weathering is this?
Mechanical weathering (root wedging)
11
Mechanical weathering (root wedging)
12
Chemical Weathering Alters a rock’s chemical makeup.
This was caused by water falling on a rock with iron in it.
13
Chemical Weathering 1:08min
14
Carbonic Acid (Chemical Weathering)
Water combines with carbon dioxide in the air, forming a weak acid solution. When the solution falls into the cracks of a rock, it dissolves the rock forming caves.
15
Acid Rain Pollution combines with rain to form acid rain.
The chemicals from the rain water cause the weathering of statues in urban areas.
16
Moss grew on this rock, chemicals from the plant and water changed the chemical make-up of the rock.
18
What caused these landforms?
Erosion is the movement of sand, gravel, or soil by wind, water, or ice. What caused these landforms? WIND
19
Wind Erosion

WIND EROSION
22
Dust Storm
23
What caused this erosion?
WATER
24
1. What caused this erosion?
25
What do you think caused this?
WATER
26
ICE EROSION During the last ice age, moving glaciers carved out fjords in Norway.
27
The deep channels carved by melting of snow and ice during eruptions.

Group assignment Use the text book to help you
Write a complete explanation and illustrate each: 1. Chemical weathering 2. Mechanical weathering 3. Water erosion 4. Wind erosion 5. Glacial erosion When you are done, raise your hand. I’ll check it, then copy into your notebooks.
