10 Umpiring – current numbers
WEST YORKSHIRE Start of year Qualified during year Total as at June 2017 A Umpires B umpires 1 24 3 C umpires 64 10 74 Actively working towards C award 6/7 As listed active in WYCNA League Handbook Approx 18 people have passed their ‘C’ written test but only about 4/6 actively working towards the full qualification. The challenge here continues to be opportunities for learner umpires to practice on good standard netball games, and them being allocated a mentor to observe them and give feedback/guidance. Mentors are all volunteers so we are relying on people’s good will. Conversion rate is still low despite ensuring that everyone who attends a C award course has to be affiliated to EN. COURSES 2017/2018 3 ‘C’ award courses 33 delegates BUT conversion is still low 10

11 Umpiring - challenges Five qualified EN Assessors, would be good to have at least two more. No Assessor courses being currently run by EN. When these become available then they will opened up to all A and B Award umpires and advertised on WYCNA website and Face Book Page. Conversion rate of delegates attending C award course and completing full qualification is still low. Many learner umpires are getting match practice on low standard netball matches eg B2N and mixed netball. This is fine for a short time but once they have built their confidence then they need to be practicing on matches equivalent to West Yorkshire Second Division Games. This is the standard they will be tested on. Mentors are volunteers so learner umpires have to be patient when asking to be observed. If they continue to contact us about observations then we will do our very best to match them up with a mentor. Circulated a really good opportunity for learner umpires to umpire good quality matches last month at a netball club’s trials. Circulated the opportunity to all 12 people who attended the last course. Not one person responded to my and/or the request. We do have several mentors, however, not all are actively mentoring people, some people are doing more than others. So again this continues to be a challenge as there are not enough people available to support learner umpires. A solution to this might be to organise an event for learner umpires to come along and umpire some friendly games whilst being observed by mentors. Eg bring the learner umpires and mentors together in one place. 11

12 Umpiring - challenges Saturday 7 July 9:30 – 12:30
Improving Umpire Standards Standard of umpiring in WYCNA league is causing concern in some areas. Since the introduction of new rules in 2016 and 2018 there appears to be a variation of how the rules are interpreted and applied in games. This is causing some issues for players, coaches and umpires. WY League Committee has requested two rules forums to try and address some of these issues/concerns. These are now advertised on WYCNA website and WY Face Book page. The tutor is Sarah Watts , an A Award umpire from North Yorkshire. Saturday 7 July 9:30 – 12:30 Sunday 9 September 9:30 – 12:30 Cedar Court Hotel, Top of M606, Bradford. ALL PLAYERS, COACHES AND UMPIRES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND. 12
