OUTSTANDING LEARNING Please see below a few examples of our outstanding learning this week. SIBLING COLLECTION Collection time in primary is always a busy time, and to avoid congestion at the end of the day, we are trying to limit the amount of secondary students in the primary area. From Monday, secondary students collecting siblings from primary will be asked to wait with their form tutor until 3.20pm. They must collect their sibling alone at 3.20pm, and not be accompanied by their friends. This week, children have been selected for their outstanding homework. Hayden in Year 5 and also pupils from Dragonfly class have completed outstanding work at home to enhance their learning in school. VICTORIAN LIFE This half term, Year 5 are learning about Victorian life. They were fortunate this week to have a visit from Katherine Shewell, a grandmother of one of our pupils. She talked about her extensive knowledge of Victorian life and what it was like to be a child in Victorian times. Both Year 5 classes were fully engaged in his fascinating talk and they were especially interested in the original artefacts that were brought in, some dating back from as far back as 1836! There was even time for a question and answer session and all children went away with a deeper understanding of Victorian life. The year 6 girls football team took part in a Lewisham borough football tournament against 30 other schools this week. They did exceptionally well, with great determination and skill, and they came second place in the competition! Fanta was recognised as being an outstanding goal keeper and Suria was also recognised for her football control and speed. There were many positive comments on the outstanding behaviour, skill and team work from St Matthew Academy pupils. It was a successful afternoon with a supportive atmosphere, well done girls! YEAR 6 FOOTBALL WORLD BOOK DAY Next week we will be celebrating Book Week. We have a wonderful week planned with lots of exciting reading related activities for the children. As part of our celebrations, we ask all children and staff to dress up for World Book Day- this is on Thursday 1st March. Your child’s costume can be as simple as wearing a hat and a badge or as elaborate as you like. We particularly love seeing your homemade creations! Please do not feel that you need to spend a lot of money on costumes as there are lots of characters in books who need very little. Your child’s class teacher can help you if you need some ideas. There will be a special assembly for children on World Book Day so that children are able to share their costumes with their friends.

Lent is a season of forty days, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry. Lent is a time of self-examination and reflection. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Lent is a special time of prayer, sacrifice and good works in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
