5 The Fluid Mosaic Model of the Phospholipid Bilayer
Fact 1 There are two main types of protein – peripheral (cell surface proteins) and integral (embedded in membrane) Globular proteins are folded into functional tertiary structure in the Golgi body. Fact 2 Integral Proteins: Intrinsic (span whole) – extrinsic (span part of) membrane proteins are globular proteins with a specific functional tertiary structure. Fact 3 Globular proteins are held in their tertiary structure by weak forces between adjacent amino acid’s R groups. Fact 4 Cholesterol may be present in animal membranes. Increase rigidity/stability Fact 5 Particles vibrate more rapidly when they gain kinetic energy. Why do proteins lose their selective permeability at high temperatures?

15 Sucrose cannot pass through cell membranes but glucose can pass through easily.
Galactose and glucose are absorbed independently. The presence of one does not affect the uptake of the other. Membranes are damaged by temperatures above normal. Polar (water soluble) substances have a lower mobility than non-polar substances. Electron micrographs at very high magnifications show membranes as a double layer. The uptake of deoxyglucose is inhibited by glucose. The membrane from a cell covers twice the cell’s surface area when it is spread on a water film.
