Roosevelt High School Art Department Sculpture Overview This course is an exploration of three dimensional art forms. Students will investigate a variety of sculptural processes and media while applying the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to their work. Students will develop an understanding of three dimensional art through the study of art history and culture, group discussion, and written critique. Advanced students will focus on developing a cohesive portfolio of work that explores personal symbols and artistic voice. BE RESPONSIBLE and SAFE: Follow directions. Handle materials properly. Take care of your work and work area. BE DILIGENT: Come to class on time and stay on task. Believe in yourself—don’t give up! BE POSITIVE: Show compassion and kindness. Keep an open mind! BE ORIGINAL: Do your own work. Supplies: Please bring a pencil to class each day! $30 Supply Fee includes clay, glaze, and bulk materials. Studio Ground Rules: Be in class on time. No food or drinks allowed at the work area. No meals in class. No electronics without teacher permission. No photos/recording in class. Clean up after yourself. Do not wait at the door before the end of class. Review 3-D Elements of Art/Principles of Design Art History/Contemporary Sculpture Sculpture Overview: Relief (High/Low) Free-Standing/Sculpture in the Round Additive vs. Reductive Basic Techniques: Carving, Modeling, Casting, Assemblage, Installation, Surface Design/Finishing Techniques, Displaying/Photographing 3-D Work (lighting, details) Studio Techniques and Mediums ●Paper Sculpture ●Paper Embossing ●Paper Mache (Armatures) ●Cardboard Relief ●Wire/Metals ●Wood Reed ●Fibers/Weaving ●Packing Tape Sculptures ●Sculpey Modeling Clay ●Ceramics Hand-building/Pottery Wheel ●Plaster ●“Faux Stone” Concrete/Vermiculite Carving ●Mosaic ●Found-object Assemblage ●Mixed-media ●Group Installation Contests and Exhibitions Sculpture students are highly encouraged to participate in both contest and exhibit opportunities, Digital Portfolio Students will photograph their artwork, documenting both their progress and final works.
