Are your districts at the 3:1 ratio of units to commissioners? Know where you stand. See “District Scouters Report.” Is the information correct? Have you registered the commissioners you’ve recruited? FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS Make recruiting a part of every commissioner meeting. Make it fun, competitive, and rewarding. Discuss at Key 3 meetings Register the recruit (paid or multiple) Make commissioner work a primary volunteer position. If we only needed one sixth of their volunteer time the ratio would be 6:1. 7 An Overall Plan of Action
1. Review (a) Compare district staff lists with registered commissioners with council registrar. (b) Determine number needed. (c) Register those not registered 2. Recruit Enact plans to fill vacancies. Set deadlines. Use Commissioner Administration of Unit Service, No E, at as a resource. 3. Recognize District Commissioners/District Executives who meet their commissioner recruiting goals. 4. Persist Be persistent in fielding a complete team. 8 Two Recruiting Approaches
Rifle-Shot (Individual) 1. Determine the need. 2. Determine prospects. 3. Research prospects. 4. Make an appointment. 5. Make the sale. 6. Get a commitment. 7. Have a fall-back position. 8. Follow-up a “Yes.” Shotgun (Group) Used to bring district up to staff quickly. Use peer support to get commitment. Train group all at one time. The Tone at the Top Council commissioners play a key role in setting the tone. Expect to field a complete team. District commissioners are key players. Help select the right person for the job. Council presidents can appoint members from the executive board to serve on the district nominating committee. Council commissioners can play a helpful role in selecting high caliber district commissioners as a member of the district nominating committee appointed by the council president when there is a district commissioner vacancy or a change is needed.
