Lacking natural resources, Japan attempted to expand its empire by attacking the Chinese province of Manchuria in In 1937, Japan invaded the remainder of China. The United States complained, citing the Open Door Policy, and began to put diplomatic and economic pressure on Japan. Eventually, the U.S. froze Japanese assets and put an embargo on Japanese oil.
