Event Election of 1860 Issue Abraham Lincoln ran as the Republican candidate on a platform of “free soil” Free Soil – idea that slavery should not be allowed to the new territories Lincoln did not support an end to slavery at this time - ONLY the end of the expansion of slavery He was not an abolitionist!

5 Result & Significance:
Lincoln did not win a majority of the popular votes - but he got more votes than any other candidate. Lincoln won with Electoral votes From the North. Southern & Border states Split their votes Among several Candidates.

6 Lincoln received no votes from the South where he was not even allowed on the ballots in ten states.
• He won the election in the electoral college.

7 The worst fears of the South had come true – a president who openly opposed the expansion of slavery had been elected.
