Indonesia’s state forest
Indonesia’s state forest can be categorized in two function, i.e. for protection/conservation forest and production forest that consists of 66% of some 120 million hectares Total area of Indonesia forest is some 120 million hectares

Production forest is a forest area that still able to fulfill a main role to produce forest products The production forest itself is defined as forest area that still able to fulfill a main role to produce forest products

Area utilization business (Usaha pemanfaatan kawasan):
Business licenses within production forests according to Indonesia Government Regulation No 6/2007, No 3/2008 on Forest Arrangement and Preparation of Forest Management Plan, and Forest Utilization Area utilization business (Usaha pemanfaatan kawasan): sustainable use of area; for medicinal plants, to use the understorey, bee, wildlife captive breeding, bird nest Sustainable use of environmental services (Usaha Pemanfaatan jasa Lingkungan) Sustainable use of wood within natural forest (Usaha pemanfaatan HHK-HA) Sustainable use of wood within plantation forest (Usaha pemanfaatan HHK-HT)

ITTO recognized that certification is potentially a powerful tool for achieving sustainable forest management since 1994

History of Certification in Indonesia
Government Regulation of the Republic Indonesia No. 34 Yr 2002 on Forest Arrangement and Preparation of Forest Management Plan, and Forest Utilization No. 6 Yr 2007 No. 3 Yr 2008 Performance evaluation every 5 yrs Accessor accredited by the Minister (LPI) Cerification, a must for licence renewal, not for terminated the liscence, could be lead to sanction/s C & I (24) followed ITTO Guidelines

About LPI (independent accessors)
LPI (consultants, universities), at present there are 13 consultants, 4 universities LPI being evaluated every 2 yrs LPI has been accredited by the Minister MoF and LEI (Ind. Ecolabeling Institute) provides capacity building for LPI Budget for evaluation been standardized by the MoF

Development FMU prepares voluntarily in the assessment by involving experts to improve the performances before/after assessment by LPI. ITTO “ Project PD 42/00 Rev. 1 (F), TOT for The Aplication of The ITTO and The National Criteria and Indicators of SFM, to strengthen FMU in SFM. Yr , 233 staff of FMU’s been trained.
