1 After today, you will be able to…
Write formulas for ionic compounds Explain what an empirical formula is List and explain the properties of ionic bonds Show bonding in ionic compounds using electron dot diagrams

2 Unit: Chemical Bonding
Day 2 - Notes Unit: Chemical Bonding Properties and Bonding of Ionic Compounds

3 Properties of Ionic Compounds…
Ionic bonds are very strong Are solids at room temperature Have high melting and boiling points Made of a metal and a nonmetal Does not conduct electricity in solid state, but does in the liquid and aqueous states Aqueous: dissolved in water

4 Examples: The formation of ionic compounds
Use electron dot structures to predict the compound that would form between Sodium and Fluorine: To write the formula write the metal first, then the nonmetal… F Na NaF

5 Examples: The formation of ionic compounds
Use electron dot structures to predict the compound that would form between Magnesium and Chlorine: Cl Mg MgCl2 Cl

6 Examples: The formation of ionic compounds
Use electron dot structures to predict the compound that would form between Aluminum and Sulfur: Al S Al S Al2S3 S

7 Empirical Formulas The chemical formula for an ionic compound is arranged in the smallest whole-number ratio is known as an empirical formula. Example: Mg3N2 vs. Mg6N4
