Acknowledging that caring for family members other than children can also be part of this conversation as those individuals face similar challenges. Learning Outcomes As a result of attending this discussion participants will be able to: Discuss the successes and challenges of career advancement while balancing a family; Obtain tips and ideas for making career decisions while balancing a family; Learn how to successfully advocate for yourself and your family. Nicole Acknowledge that people can define their own family

5 Conceptual Framework Notion of work/life balance often researched (Edwards & Rothbard, 2000; Friedman & Greenhaus, 2000; Jones, Burke, & Westman, 2006; Parasuraman & Greenhaus, 2002, etc…) Challenges associated with advancement are inherent in this discussion, but not absolute. Role conflict was central focus of 2013 study, which is different than many previous studies. Nicole Role Conflict: a situation in which a person is expected to “play” to incompatible roles. Think about the number of roles you hold. Acknowledgement that single caregivers experience more role conflict than others, which can create more challenges in the workplace related to advancement. Role overload: those who have more than 5 roles tend to have experienced guilt, stress, dissatisfaction Work/family conflict: roles compete for time; pressure in one role causes preoccupations in another; time--there just isn’t enough Behavior-based conflicts tend to impact women more than men; leadership traits often defined as masculine rather than feminine. Implicit expectations on various roles (for example: mother/father, supervisor) Lamar to talk about his experiences re: expectations of him as a man/father How are our experiences different (or the same) based on our role? Nicole: It’s not all bad though! Research shows women benefit by holding multiple roles through financial security, larger social/support networks, increase self-esteem/confidence. Men….better health! (1981, 2006 studies).

6 Conceptual Framework, continued Feminist poststructuralism: valuable way to study normal, everyday practice Uses language, subjectivity, and power relations to understand and identify strategies for change Nicole Feminist poststructuralists do not view power as oppressive; rather power is exercised rather than possessed. Therefore, we need to recognize the power we have within our many roles to create opportunities for ourselves and others. The current reality in higher education and student affairs is that power dictates the complex social realities that create and support gendered institutional practices related to advancement and promotion. 6

7 Major considerations Institutional fit/values

Looking at the list of challenges and needs generated from the questions posed on the previous slide, how would advancement change, complicate, or eliminate the items? Lamar 10
