Early Man The Old & New Stone Ages
2
Origins Homo Sapiens (humans) walked out of Africa somewhere between 400,000 and 100,000 years ago. From there they migrated almost everywhere. (even Australia and the Americas.) What are the two ideas on how man started? How did people get to the Americas from Asia?
3
How did they get to all of these places?
4
These early people were nomads, or people who have no permanent home
These early people were nomads, or people who have no permanent home. They are also called hunter-gatherers Why? (They hunted and gathered food, but did not grow it.)
5
So, which gender usually did which activity?
6
The Old Stone Age (Paleolithic Era)
What kind of tools do you think that people used during the Old Stone Age? These early people invented simple tools (stone knives and bone fish-hooks) and weapons (spears & simple bows)
7
They also: lived in clans or tribes, developed oral language,
made fires, (very important! Why?)
8
New Stone Age (Neolithic Era)
The new stone age is all about farming & settling down. Once people start to grow their own food, they don’t need to follow herds of wild animals.
9
Benefits: This brings about many benefits:
People now have time to make pottery to hold the grown food. (They don’t have to carry it around, either.) - They also develop weaving skills- making wool, instead of leather clothes.
10
People now have time to spend making more advanced tools and weapons.
They also begin to domesticate, or train and tame plants and animals. What was the first domesticated animal?
11
The Dog! 1st Domesticated Animal
OK, maybe this doesn’t count.
12
Reflection: What does the Neolithic Era mean?
What happened to make this new stone age different from the old one? What are some other differences between the two eras?
