2 Prehistory has 2 periods (Eras)
OLD STONE AGE- Paleolithic Period Longer period, 2 million B.C.E. to 10,000 B.C.E. Used stone tools, had fire, oral language NEW STONE AGE- Neolithic Period 10,000 B.C.E. until end of prehistory (beginning of writing), approximately 4000 B.C.E. Used advanced stone tools, technological advances to change lives

Nomads=people who move from place to place for food Small bands or family groups (20-30 people) Moved around hunting and gathering food

4 Old Stone Age How they got their food
Hunters and gatherers Followed the food Fished along coastal area Gathered nut, berries, and grains

5 Old Stone Age Shelter Natural protection, caves or rock overhangs
Over time they began to use animal skins to make clothing

6 Old Stone Age Tools and Technology
Sticks, branches, stones Evolved into more advanced tools made from flint and sharpened stone Needles from bones Fishhooks Fire was great advancement. Food could be cooked-YUMMY!

7 Old Stone Age Roles of Men and Women surprise---they were equal!
Hunted large animals often far from camp Stayed close to camp Looked after children Gathered nuts and berries near camp

8 Old Stone Age Communication
Basic sounds and gestures Evolved into oral language NO WRITING! Expressed themselves through art, stories, and song

9 New Stone Age (Neolithic Period)
Begins with farming- 8,000 B.C.E. This causes a transition into New Stone Age This transition known as Neolithic Revolution (BIG CHANGE!) Farming= no need to wander, so they can now stay in one place

10 New Stone Age (Neolithic Period)
Neolithic Revolution Domesticated plants and animals Domesticate=tame animals for human use Raised crops, used animals to help them farm

11 New Stone Age (Neolithic Period)
Neolithic Revolution (Agricultural Revolution) Farming allowed people produce a constant food supply They settled down and lived in communities More food=more people, cities emerge Farming develops all around the world at roughly the same time, usually around a steady water supply like a river

12 New Stone Age (Neolithic Period)
New technologies= Ways to count and save seeds Calendars to keep track of when to plant Use animals to help plow Weave cloth Pottery for cooking and storage Two excavated Neolithic communities gave historians a lot of info about this time
