Titration
2
What is Titration? A lab practice used to determine the concentration of an unknown acid or base by neutralizing it with a known acid or base. An indicator is used to determine when the solution is neutralized.
3
Calculating unknowns with titration
Titration is used specifically when you have an unknown concentration of an acid or base. The equation to use is: 𝑀 𝑎 (#𝐻) 𝑉 𝑎 = 𝑀 𝑏 (#𝑂𝐻) 𝑉 𝑏 Both equations require you to know the correct balanced neutralization equation.
4
Steps to Solve Titration
Write the balanced dissociation equation for both the acid and base. Determine the number of hydrogens and hydroxides from the dissociation equations. Plug in all known values; molarities, volumes, and #H, #OH. Solve the equation for the unknown.

Example If it takes 50 mL of 0.5 M KOH solution to completely neutralize 125 mL of sulfuric acid solution, what is the concentration of the sulfuric acid solution? Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4:
6
Practice on your own: What is the concentration of hydrochloric acid if 50 mL is neutralized by 20 mL of 0.3 M sodium hydroxide?
7
Practice on your own: If it takes 54 mL of 0.1 M NaOH to neutralize 125 mL of an HCl solution, what is the concentration of the HCl?
8
Practice on your own: It takes 38 mL of 0.75 M NaOH solution to completely neutralize 155 mL of a sulfuric acid solution. What is the concentration of the sulfuric acid solution?
