Concentration
2
Quick INquiry In a group, find 3 substances that are used in everyday life (or industry) that use the concentration measurements mol/L, ppm and %vv
3
Why do we need to know this?
Knowing the concentration of a solution tells us how strong it is, and how quickly it will react!
4
Concentration The amount of a specific substance in a known volume of solution
5
Molar Concentration Number of moles in 1L of solution.
Units are mol/L or M
6
C = n v
7
ExampleS What is the molarity of pure sulfuric acid, created by combining 12mols of sulfuric acid in 3500mL of water? What is the molarity of CaCl2 in a solution made by dissolving and diluting 15.0g of CaCl2 into 4.00L of water? What mass of NaOH is contained in 3.50L of 0.200mol/L NaOH? What mass of sodium chloride would be required to create a 5.0mol/L solution in a 2.0L volumetric flask?
8
PPM Parts per million is a measure of mg/L or mg/kg
9
Example A 200g sample from a bottle of water contains g of mercury. Calculate the concentration of mercury in the sample in parts per million.
10
Percent by Volume % VV is a measurement of the amount of solvent in total solution. Just like in a test, the units for %VV are %
11
Example A hair product requires you to combine 20.0mL of hydrogen peroxide with enough water to produce a solution with a total volume of 120.0mL. Determine the percent by volume concentration of the solution.
