In order to talk about the properties of atoms we need to talk about this…
Why do we have a periodic table? A man, whose identity will be revealed Monday during your projects... He is heralded as not only one of the greatest contributors to chemistry, but to science in general. So if the periodic table is his claim to fame, what is so great about the periodic table? He was able to classify the elements by putting them into categories, groups

Families One way the periodic table is organized is in families?
Let’s drift away from chemistry for a minute

Inquiry Activity Categorize the elements into as many groups as possible. You are going to do an inquiry activity. What does inquiry mean? In your table groups, you will organize the elements, which are on these cards into 9 groups. All the elements in your groups should have similar properties. Everybody take out your crossword puzzles….on the back there is a periodic table Ignore the directions underneath the table On the periodic table outline the groups you come up with Once you get those groups keep them out on your table until we finish going over it.

5 Main Families Alkaline Earth Metals Noble Gases Alkali Metals
Halogens Transition Metals So there are 5 main families that we will focus on… Lanthanides Actinides

Alkali Metals Very reactive metals that do not occur freely in nature
Malleable, ductile, and are good conductors of heat and electricity

Alkaline Earth Metals Not as reactive as Alkali metals, but also do not occur freely in nature Ductile and malleable Reacts easily with Halogens in water

Transition Metals Form colored compounds
Good conductors of heat and electricity Ductile and malleable They are less reactive than alkali metals Includes: Lanthanides Actinides

Halogens Highly reactive nonmetals
Exist as diatomic molecules in a gaseous state (Cl2, F2, I2, etc.) Poisonous

Noble Gases Nonreactive gases Colorless and odorless gas

Metals Metals are… Solid Malleable and ductile
Have good electrical and thermal conductivity Lustrous

Nonmetals Nonmetals are… mostly gases (not all)
Not malleable or ductile Poor electrical conductivity Dull

Metalloids Metalloids are… metallic in appearance brittle
behave like nonmetals fairly conductive (semiconductors)
