COMPARATIVE AND SUPERLATIVE OF ADJECTIVES

USES We use the comparative to compare two persons or things.
Ex. My sister is taller than my mother. We use the superlative to compare more than two persons or things or to say that one is more than the rest of the group. Ex. My sister is the tallest in my family.

The formation depends on the number of syllables: Adjectives of one syllable add –ER to the adjective + THAN …

Adjectives of three or more syllables:
more + adjective + than My cat is more intelligent than your cat.

Adjectives of two syllables:
If they end in –y / -er / -ow they add - ER + THAN She is happier than me. He is cleverer than them. This street is narrower than my street.

If they have other endings:
MORE + ADJECTIVE + THAN more modern than more stupid than

SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES OF ONE SYLLABLE OR TWO (ending in –y / -er / -ow) the + adjective + -est This is the hottest place in the world. It is the easiest exercise I have ever done.
