Some atoms for Ions IONS IONS
Ions are charged particles that come from atoms. Ions can have either a positive (+) or negative (-) charge. Written with the element symbol with a superscript . H+1
2
Some atom Form Ions Positive ions Negative Ions
Metals form positive ions Positive ions are formed by losing electrons. Group #s tell what the (+) charge will be. Lithium (Li) atom loses one electron to become Li+1 Non-metals form negative ions. Negative ions are formed by gaining electrons. How far you are from group 8 is what your charge. Fluorine (F) atom gains one electron to become F-1

How do structures of atoms Differ?
Protons = the atomic # of an element Protons give the element it’s identity Protons are given the identity Z number Identify each element Z=2, Z=45, Z=23 Isotopes are atoms of an element with the same # of protons, but different # of neutrons. The Mass number is the number of protons + the number of neutrons. Mass # is given the identity A number
