Introduction to Chemistry
Mr. Stripling Pre-AP Chemistry Room 402
2
The Basics Matter – makes up all things that take up space
Chemistry – the study of matter and the changes it undergoes Substance – matter that has a definite and uniform composition. Also known as a chemical.
3
Mass – a measurement that reflects the amount of matter
Weight – a measure of matter and the effect of Earth’s gravitation pull on that matter
4
Scientific Methods A systematic approach used in scientific study. It is an organized process used to do research.
5
Observations Qualitative data – describes color, odor, shape, or any physical characteristic Quantitative data – tells how much how little, how big, how tall, or how fast. Numerical information
6
Hypothesis A tentative, testable statement or prediction about what has been observed.
7
Experiment A set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis.
Independent variable – what we intend to change. Dependent variable – changes in response to a change in the independent variable Control – a standard for comparison
8
Conclusion A judgement based on the information obtained.
9
Theory & Scientific Law
Theory – an explanation of a natural phenomenon based on many observations over time. Scientific law – a relationship in nature that is supported by many experiments
