British immigration Cause: industrialisation in England = surplus of agricultural workers = moved to Upper & Lower Canada : immigrants get off boats at the Port of Quebec City most are Irish immigrants. Consequences of this immigration: French-Canadian population (Upper and Lower Canada) in 1800 = 80% de la population French-Canadian population (Upper and Lower Canada) in 1840 = 50% de la population

Transformation of society we really start to see wealthy men control society Development of certain groups : Buisness class (English) that control executive power Professional classes (docters, lawyers, etc.) that want to control the assembly ‘shop owners’ Artisan workers

seigneurs (decline of agriculture) Clergy (influence on society is slowly taken by professional class) Les habitants (deviens vraiment pauvres) CONCLUSION : Old Values (agriculture, religion, French language) VS. new values (English economic development)
