SWBAT compare two primary sources on the Aztec practice of human sacrifice in order to evaluate how perspective influences’ the writing of history. What are primary sources, and how are they used to understand historical events? What did the Spanish think of the Aztecs?

5 Primary Source Analysis
What is a primary source? How does it differ from a secondary source? Do Now responses: Explain how this quote relates to the study of history: “Until the lion has his or her own storyteller, the story of the hunt will always be told by the hunter.” (African Proverb) How can primary sources be biased?

6 Primary Source Analysis: SOAPS
Speaker: Who wrote the document? What is their background? What perspective or possible bias might they have? Occasion: When and where was the document written? Audience: Who was this document intended for? Was it written for educational purposes? Was it written as a private reflection? Was it written to impress or convince someone? Purpose: Why did the author write this document? Was he or she paid or otherwise solicited to write it? Was it planned, or was it simply an observation? Was it written to educate or to pursuade someone? Subject: What is this document about? Tone: What does the author’s tone convey about the above? Are they surprised, reflective, in awe, grief- stricken, disgusted, impressed, joyful, or solemn?

7 Primary Source Analysis: Comparison
Goal: How did the conquering Spanish and the Aztecs differ in their interpretations of human sacrifice? Directions: Partner whose next class is closest to this classroom will begin reading the source aloud. Then, Partner 2 will read and lead the discussion of the analysis questions.

8 Bringing it all together
Summary: How does Diaz’s description of human sacrifice (document A) differ from that presented by the Aztec scribe (document B)? Analyze: Why do these two authors differ so greatly in their interpretations of the same ritual? Analyze: Together, how do these two sources inform us about human sacrifice? In other words, how do the sources corroborate one another on the ritual of human sacrifice in Aztec society?
