2 What was Russia like in 1900? Information about country Based upon the information, would you want to live in this country? You must explain your answer with at least 2 additional sentences. Based upon this information, what would you change to the country in order to make it more appealing? Make sure you explain your answer. Large area spanning from Eastern Europe to Asia. A total population of 125 million people made up of 20 different peoples. These peoples have different languages and cultures to each other and to their leader who is Russian. Absolutely not Probably not Likely Extremely likely Yes, without a doubt Explain your judgement: The leader (the tsar) does not allow the ethnicities to follow their own culture and religion. He forces them to follow his. He also does not listen to the views of the people in his empire, he simply tells them what to do because he believes he knows what is best for them. He even has a secret police. They make sure no one voices any negative opinions about him, by arresting them or executing them if they do. The railway is unfinished and so it is difficult to transport goods or deliver communications effectively. It takes several days to get from one end of the empire to the other. The roads are also unfinished or are of a bad quality – when it rains they become muddy - and the sea, used for shipping, is often frozen because it is so cold in some areas. People are poorly paid; some because the weather is so bad that they cannot grow enough crops to sell, others because the government do not believe in paying them too much. However, there are some very rich people who get even richer from the profits of peasants who work for them for low wages. Technology is still very much behind other European countries. Because the roads and railways are slow, trade is also very slow. Other countries like Britain are able to produce more goods at lower prices and transport them faster. There is a lot of land so farming is the main source of the economy, however there is a lot of land wasted because it is uninhabitable and the climate is not suitable for growing food. There have been a lot of famines. There are a lot of natural reserves like coal, steel and oil. Industrialisation is beginning to happen and many workers are leaving the countryside to work in the towns. Pay and living conditions in the towns are not very good but the tsar is not the sort of leader who takes criticism lightly.
