Water Movement in Plants
Water moves up the xylem of plants due to the 5 functions/forces. Transpirational pull Adhesion Cohesion Capillarity Osmotic pressure
2
Transpirational pull: water evaporates from the leaves and creates an upward pull felt along the xylem (using a straw)
3
Adhesion: the attraction of unlike molecules that cause water molecules to be attracted to the walls of xylem tubes
4
Cohesion: the polarity of water molecules causes an attraction between water molecules which helps pull up water in the xylem
5
Capillarity: the ability of water to easily move up a tube because it is narrow compared to a very wide tube
6
Osmotic pressure: difference in pressure that builds because the endodermis lets water in but not out
