Annotate this drawing. What can you infer? What is the significance of the snake and the microscope?

Lesson Objectives To identify the developments Robert Koch made following on from the work of Pasteur To analyse which factors were more important in the work of Koch To evaluate who made the most significant contribution, Pasteur or Koch

Who was Robert Koch? Born in Germany 1843.
A doctor (unlike Pasteur) who became particularly interested in Pasteur's work. He bought his own microscope(!!) and studied anthrax, a disease which affected humans and animals. (See Interview!) In 1875 he identified the microbe that caused it !

His meticulous research so impressed people that the German government gave him a full time job and a talented team of bacteriologists to continue his research. He moved on to study Septicaemia (blood poisoning). He used new technology to study the microbe and make the link between the germ and the disease. He later identified the germ that caused TB (a big killer) AND found the germ that caused Cholera.

Why was Koch’s work significant?
Inspired others to ‘seek the microbe’ – including Pasteur who saw Koch as a rival Government was impressed by Koch and agreed to fund full time bacteriologists ‘Microbe Hunters’ Lead to discovery of specific microbes – lead to vaccines and later chemotherapy Promoted the use of new technology Pioneered superb experimental methods.

Competitive Rivalry V ????

How did Pasteur respond to Koch’s work?

What happened at Pouilly-le-Fort?

Plenary Do Pasteur and Koch deserve equal credit for the progress in understanding the cause and cure of disease? Justify your answer using examples and your own knowledge.
