Objectives Today I will learn… How to review specific literary term.
How to utilize independent time to read a personal choice novel. I will know I have learned this when… I am able to recall previously learned skills and then use them for analysis of my novel. I am able to use independent time to read and create pieces that show comprehension, analysis, and connections within a text.

Tone and Mood in Simple Terms
Tone and mood both deal with the emotions centered around a piece of writing. Though they seem similar and can be related causally, they are in fact quite different. Tone reflects the author’s attitude toward a subject (often that attitude comes across from a character) Mood is the emotions a selection arouses in a reader.
7
In your house… Example:
You do something AWFUL, and your parents are THE ANGRIEST THEY HAVE EVER BEEN WITH YOU. How does it feel when you are inside the house? How does it sound when your parents speak to you?
8
How much control do you have on tone? On mood?
Let’s play a game. I didn’t do it.
9
Examples: “I wasn’t looking forward to meeting her. I dreaded blind dates. My buddies forced me to go on the date. Men and women can’t meet and fall in love without any prior connection to one in other. Love at first sight doesn't exist. My parents knew each other years before they ever shared a pizza and a movie. My dad always says that even then it was years before he stopped seeing other girls. A man can’t be tied down to just one girlfriend. It’s not natural. This date was doomed. Just because all my buddies find themselves stuck with the same girl night after night doesn’t mean I have endure the same punishment.” What is the tone? What specific words justify that tone?
10
Continued Example: “He had a reputation of a player. My friends thought I was crazy for even giving him a chance. But I can see that he wants something special. He seems alone even in the crowd of his friends. I think that people all want to feel that one special connection with another person. I’m not naive; I don’t expect for him to fall head over heels for me and stop being himself. I just think that one nice night might let him know that something is out there.” What is the mood of this piece?
11
What’s the big deal? Tone and mood starts to pull together all the elements of literature. The setting influences the tone and can help to establish a mood before anything is even said. Characterization is established through tone. The way a character reacts to a situation or an object can set his/ her tone even if a character doesn’t react can give a tone of unfeeling or oblivious. The point of view (as seen in the examples) can set up the tone of the characters as well as the mood of the situation. Conflict influences mood and how the reader deals with the plot. TONE and MOOD help to pull together all the elements by bringing in EMOTION.
12
Mood Practice Using pictures we are going to discuss the mood of several different situations. Students must be able to justify their reasoning by explaining how the determined mood was created.

DISTRACTIONS Phones/headphones/devices Other work/books/etc.
