3 Orientation New Employees—Very formal orientation-be very specific about the expectations Orientation should take place before the employee begins the job or the first day on the job

4 Orientation Existing Employees- Have a formal orientation for your returning employees every year Specifically train if there is a new piece of equipment or a new job or process in your department

5 Orientation Tell your employees where to find help if they have questions Employees should be comfortable asking questions especially if they have not been trained on a piece of equipment or in a specific process

6 Job Descriptions Have job descriptions for all employees
Make sure they are up to date and accurately describe all physical requirements of the job Give the employee a description of the steps they must do to complete the job

7 Job Descriptions If you don’t have a job description, then ask the supervisor to create one You may also want to engage the employee when creating the description to ensure it accurately describes the position

8 Job Descriptions Job descriptions may also help if the employee is injured on the job Accurate job descriptions help a treating physician assess whether or not an employee can return to work with restrictions or full duty, rather than starting from scratch

9 Follow up/Evaluate Follow up/Evaluate your employees after orientation
Evaluate both new and returning employees Go over the evaluation with the employee

10 Follow up/Evaluate Document unsafe behavior and the plan to correct it
Emphasize the expectation of using proper PPE and using safe processes

11 Re-train Re-training at regular intervals
Experienced employees sometimes get complacent and take short cuts

12 Frequency Repetition, repetition, repetition
Training is better in repetition; It is better to train regularly than all at once and never mention it again—employees will only place importance on the subjects you continuously discuss

13 Frequency Employees should have regular safety meetings and training to reinforce what is important-Safety Make a safety statement at the end of every meeting

14 Resources MSBA sends out tool kits to our Workers’ Comp Trust members about every other month These include a handout, poster and powerpoint
