1 2.4 Deductive Reasoning

2 Deductive Reasoning (sometimes called logical reasoning) is the process of reasoning logically from given statements or facts to a conclusion. It’s the idea of making a conclusion based on already known facts such as definitions, postulates, and/or theorems. Its using things we already know to make a conclusion.

3 Law of Detachment In order to use this law, you must first identify the hypothesis of the given true conditional. A second statement is then given, if that statement matches the hypothesis you can then make a valid conclusion.

4 Law of detachment example
Highlight the hypothesis. Second given statement is: Does this second statement match the highlighted hypothesis? So what conclusion then can you make?

5 Highlight the hypothesis
Second given statement is: Now what conclusion can you make?

6 Second given statement is:
-Highlight the hypothesis Second given statement is: What conclusion can you make? Does the second statement match the hypothesis?. Why or why not?

7 Law of Syllogism This second law allows you to state a conclusion from two true conditional statements when the conclusion of one statement is the hypothesis of the other statement.
