1 Phonics Workshop 15th November 2017

2 In school, we follow the Song of Sounds programme
In school, we follow the Song of Sounds programme. This is a programme created by a Deputy and Head teacher within West Sussex with a high success rate in the National Curriculum’s Year 1 statutory phonics screening.

3 Terminology Phoneme – the smallest unit of sound e.g. /p/
Grapheme – a phoneme written down Segmenting (spelling) and blending (reading) Digraph – a phoneme that is made up of 2 letters e.g. /ch/ /oa/ /ee/ Trigraph – a single sound made up of 3 letters e.g. /igh/ in light Split digraph – when a digraph is is split by a consonant e.g cake

5 What next? j, v, w, x y, z, zz, qu Consonant digraphs: ch, sh, th, ng Vowel digraphs: ay, ee, igh, ow, oo, oo, ar, or, er, ou, oy, air Tricky words will be introduced throughout the programme: I, the, he, she, we, be, me, go, no, to, was, saw, my, you, they, all, are

6 Assessment weeks Children are assessed at specific points throughout the programme (roughly halfway through each term) to not only monitor children’s progress but also identify key areas for revision.

10 What does a Phonics lesson look like?
Say Show children how to say /p/ (pure sound not puh). Show children the new action and perform it together. Lots of repetition. Read Show children the grapheme and explain what it looks like. Write Show children how to form a ‘p’ using the explanation “go down the handle, back up and around the pan”. Children practise in the air, on backs, then on whiteboards. Blend Using green ‘go’ words (containing the sounds we have learnt so far) practise reading and blending the graphemes to make the words.
