Primary sources telling the story of slaves Dialect A way of speaking particular to a specific place or region

Slave Narratives Early narratives were written by freed slaves who received an education Examples: Frederick Douglass and Olaudah Equiano

Slave Narratives Later narratives were mostly interviews of former slaves gathered by the Federal Writers' Project in the 1930s Over 2,000 stories were recorded

5 Functions of Slave Narratives
1. To document the conditions of or “truth” about slavery; 2. To encourage the abolition of slavery; 3. To provide religious inspiration; 4. To assert the narrator’s personhood; 5. To challenge stereotypes about blacks.
