Van Gogh, Starry Night, 1889 The short tubular brush strokes that have become so characteristically Van Gogh are dominant in this image, particularly the sky. The swirling sky creates an emotions. He painted this from inside of an asylum. It is predicted that this image was painted after a vision he had during a seizure. Ask class: What do you think this image represents? What do you think Van Gogh was suggesting by the swirling sky?

Van Gogh, Self Portraits
Van Gogh suffered fits of mental illness which made it difficult for him to paint. He cut off his ear in a fit of anger and eventually committed suicide. You can see the despair and depression in his self portraits. Wheat Fields with Crows was his last painting, painted hours before he killed himself.
