Electrical Energy Elaborate 182
2
Read the following We all know how important electricity is to our lives. All it takes is one power failure to remind us how much we depend on electricity.
3
We use electricity to light our homes, operate appliances, heat and cool buildings, and power machines.
4
Power Plants The Electricity we use every day is produced in large power plants.
5
How Electricity is Generated
Power plants generally use the potential energy as chemical energy in coal to heat water in huge boilers. The water boils and turns into steam.
6
The Generator The pressure of the steam turn the blades of a turbine. The kinetic energy of the turbine turns the coils in a generator to create electricity.
7
Power Plant Generator
8
To our Homes Electricity is then sent through wires to homes, businesses, and industries.
9
Key Questions Coal is a stored chemical energy. Is coal an example of renewable or nonrenewable resource? Why? Is coal an example of potential or kinetic energy? Why? Sequence the energy transformation in a power plant.
10
Design a concept Map With your group design a concept map to show your understanding of how energy is transformed into electricity.
