2 Guiding Principles for Organisational Leadership November 2016
“The principles provide guidance on what good leadership looks like in an organisation and help forces develop and inspirational and compelling vision for its support and delivery. Ultimately, while the principles intend to inform how forces approach leadership, it’s only forces and leaders themselves who can make them a reality.”

3 Nine guiding principles structured around three key themes…..
We set out what is meant by each principle What can assist in achieving the principle The potential sources of evidence that might illustrate that the principle is being achieved.

5 Wide ranging consultation and engagement…
Developed with: NPCC and HMIC 2016 HMIC Police Leadership report stated: “the Principles will be used inform the criteria for HMIC inspections and forces should use these principles in developing their approach to leadership in the future.” Summary of consultation and engagement activity : January 2016 ‘Shaping the standards’ event in Ryton, with 71 attendees, including chiefs, deputies, ACCs, leadership development leads. April 2017 Draft published on NPCC intranet and feedback requested Feedback invited from a range of groups across policing see above May 2016 feedback received, including feedback from 21 forces September 2016 Shared with Leadership Review Oversight Group and feedback received, further update to oversight group in Nov 2016 Final draft shared: by Giles York with Chiefs at the CPD day with Chief Officer Professional Development Champions, receiving positive feedback, with DCCs at organisational design development day, Most positive feedback from ACC Critchley Merseyside Police ………..it is an excellent read and we have already built the Merseyside Police Leadership strategy around the nine guiding principles structured under the three themes – Understanding, Developing and Displaying Leadership. This is a logical, easy to understand structure and indeed HMIC have already used this in some of their inspection work with the force. Implementation of the principles highlights the importance of learning from failure and moving away from a blame culture
