Only the oldest sons of wealthy landowners could inherit estates, so younger sons went in search of fortune.

4. Jamestown
Virginia Company receives charter from James I for a New World settlement.
Was supposed to only be for a few years to turn a quick profit (Joint-stock company)
Charter of the Virginia Company a very important document.
Guarantees to overseas British settlers the same rights as if they were at home
