1 Georgia’s Role in the U.S. Constitutional Convention

2 The Constitutional Convention
Held in Philadelphia and lasted four months

3 A. Fifty-five delegates- (representatives sent by states) were sent
1. Average age was forty-two. 2. Most had played an important role in the Revolution. 3. Some were rich, most were not, but nobody was poor.

4 B. Most important delegates were as follows:
1. George Washington- respected leader 2. Benjamin Franklin- oldest (81) known for supporting compromise. 3. James Madison- influence in the Constitution was great. He is often called the Father of the Constitution.

5 Georgia’s Role A. Four delegates were sent from Georgia: William Pierce, William Houston, William Few and Abraham Baldwin. B. Only Few and Baldwin actually signed the Constitution. C. Baldwin was important because he also was a compromiser and under a very heated argument kept the Congress together.

6 The Approval On September 17, 1787, Georgia and eight other states ratified (gave formal approval) the Constitution.
