10. Virginia
The London and Plymouth Companies were sent to Virginia; the London Company succeeded in setting up Jamestown in 1607 with 105 colonists. The colony did not function as well as the Pocahontas movie portrayed - the colonists did not know how to handle the environment, each other, or the hostile Native Americans; they also spent too much time searching for gold.
