Journal Topic: Brainstorm/memory activation--Introduction to English Colonial Settlement ( ) Early English Colonial Settlement Roanoke (1587) Plymouth (1620) Jamestown (1607) Task: Complete the brainstorm diagram by adding what you know about Jamestown, Roanoke, and Plymouth.

English Settlements before Jamestown
1584—Sir Walter Raleigh sends an exploratory mission to North America. Explores what is now Roanoke Island. Names all of the South Eastern United states Virginia for his Queen, Elizabeth I. 1585—Raleigh attempts the first English settlement in North America at Roanoke Island. The settlement attempt fails as hostilities with the Indians arise over the theft of a silver cup. Sir Francis Drake brings the settlers back to England. He also brings tobacco and the white potato. 1587—Raleigh sends a second mission to settle Roanoke Island. Virginia Dare is born. John White, Governor of Roanoke takes a ship back to England to get much needed supplies. 1590—White returns to Roanoke and finds the settlement completely deserted. Only the word “Croatoan” is carved into a post. 1607—Jamestown Settlement is established. Current Location of Jamestown and Roanoke Island

Reason for Founding: Jamestown vs. Plymouth
-economic prosperity -single men hoped to make fortunes in Virginia and return to England -previous explorers brought home tales of vast amounts of gold and other valuable resources -English patriotism -adventurers wanted to stake English claim to prevent Spanish from taking over all of North America -religious freedom -Puritans persecuted for rebelling against the Church of England -felt Church had not completed the work of the Reformation-was too close to Roman Catholicism Land

Founding Jamestown vs. Plymouth
-funded by London Company, a private enterprise -granted charter by King James, but no funding -company recruited people by promising that gold could be found by anyone who made the trip -king predetermined government of colony -upon arrival colonists opened sealed box with assignments to governing council Plymouth 1620 -received funding from London Company -treasurer of London Co. was friends with one of the settlers -Separatists granted land in Virginia, but chose instead to settle in Plymouth -signed Mayflower Compact to appease non-Separatists on board who were rumored to be uneasy about settling somewhere other than specified land grant

Initial Difficulties Jamestown vs. Plymouth
-laziness of colonists -did not expect to do manual labor -depended on natives for food -disease and starvation over 60% of the colonists in the first year -failed attempts to befriend Indians led to multiple skirmishes -Mayflower land on December 21, many Pilgrims died in harsh first winter -attempts at agriculture initially failed

Factors Responsible for Success Jamestown vs. Plymouth
-Captain John Smith took control of government -instituted "no work, no eat" policy -firm leadership helped colony survive first few difficult years -ability to grow tobacco made land valuable -population grew as a result -strength of Mayflower Compact -able leaders like William Bradford and Miles Standish -English-speaking Squanto, a survivor from previous explorations, taught Pilgrims to grow corn -this cooperation led to the first Thanksgiving symbolized friendly relations between Pilgrims and Indians

Social Differences Jamestown vs. Plymouth
Settled initially by single men intent on getting rich—initially gold the objective Many of the initial settlers were high born gentlemen who lacked basic farming skills Settled by men and women intent on establishing a community Most men were farmers or craftsmen with skills necessary for starting a new community

Relations With Indians Jamestown vs. Plymouth
Powhatan Indians dominated the region, including at least 28 other tribes Indians attacked the colony and stole materials repeatedly Both sides dealt harshly with each other Jamestown settlers tried to make Chief Powhatan a subject of King James Pocahantas Married John Rolfe and a treaty was created between the English and the Powhatan Local Wampanoag Indians were weakened by disease and threatened by hostile neighbors Samoset and Squanto helped the Pilgrims with supplies and planting Edward Winslow negotiated a mutual defense peace treaty with Chief Massasoit First Thanksgiving with hundreds of Wampanoag Indians in attendance
