A review of the last several years

The General Education Committee was given the mandate to “rework” GE

Set up a foundation first
Set up criteria for each area Worked with department chairs and deans Use the criteria for reviewing courses, both new and existing

Review courses to make sure they meet the criteria
Use criteria as standards Collect syllabi Collect student surveys about criteria for the course Conducted on a 5-year cycle

Limitations R470 gives main requirements 30-39 credits (UVU has 35)
Core of 12 credits (writing, math, American Institutions) Breadth of 15 credits (arts, humanities, life science, physical science, and social or behavioral science) 3 credits anywhere else Easy transferability to and from other USHE institutions Facilitate acceptance of credit from AP Concurrent enrollment Challenge exams Other sources

Ensure the quality of courses Guarantee that students will experience high-impact practices in GE Set up ePortfolios in GE classes Guarantee that students will learn teamwork in the GE Curriculum Guarantee that students will learn oral communications in the GE Curriculum Conduct periodic formal review of the overall GE program relative to student success Invite GE Committee representatives to your meetings

Where should the authority be to approve and review courses? All deans Gatekeeper department chairs A university-level faculty committee Who should have the stewardship for the General Education program?
