1 The Roar of The Lord Amos 1:1-2

2 The Lord Roars

3 Amos 1:2 And he said: “The Lord roars from Zion, And utters His voice from Jerusalem; The pastures of the shepherds mourn, And the top of Carmel withers.”

4 The Lord Roars The image is borrowed from the lion who roars to paralyze his prey with fear. “The Lord roars…”

5 The Lord Roars Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”

6 The Lord Roars 14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” Exodus 3:13-14

7 The Lord Roars “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Exodus 20:7

8 The Lord Roars The image is borrowed from the lion who roars to paralyze his prey with fear. “The Lord roars…” The “Lord roars” is judgment.

9 The Lord Knows

10 The Lord Knows 1. The blades of grass in the pastures and/or the “top” or peaks of Mt.Carmel are under God’s scrutiny. 2. God has known the conduct of the various nations Amos discussed. 3. The Old Testament emphasis: the eyes of the Lord are in every place.

11 The Lord Knows 4. The New Testament affirmation: all things are naked and open.

12 The Lord Knows 12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:12-13

13 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet

14 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
God holds men responsible for their conduct. The Gentiles had the moral law written in the consciences.

15 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)

16 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. Romans 2:14-16

17 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
God holds men responsible for their conduct. The Gentiles had the moral law written in the consciences. Examining the situations in Amos 1

18 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
Damascus & Syria Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they have threshed Gilead with implements of iron. Amos 1:3

19 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
Gaza They had taken people captive. They were to perish.

20 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
Tyre 1. They had delivered up people to captivity. 2. They did not honor the covenant of brotherhood.

21 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
Edom 1. The country south east of Israel. The descendants of Esau. 2. They had not shown pity but rather were cruel.

22 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
Ammon Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of the people of Ammon, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they ripped open the women with child in Gilead, That they might enlarge their territory Amos 1:13

23 God’s Mercy & Judgment Meet.
God knew what was happening Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life Galatians 6:7-8

24 Lessons for Us Today

25 Why discuss the fate of sinful nations?
We can see in others what we cannot see in ourselves. If we accept the justice in God’s dealings with others we should accept His justice in dealing with us.

26 God’s Justice Has Not Changed
1. The law of sowing & reaping still applies today. 2. Sowing in sin will cause one to reap punishment.

27 Conclusion 1. We would be wise to learn from the wicked ones who have gone before us. 2. Amos denounced sin in his day, we should do the same still today.
