2. What is it called?
On the top of the page of paper, give your place a name. Nothing offensive, violent gang, drug, or alcohol related.
Be Prepared to follow directions. You will have many opportunities to be creative. The drawing doesn’t have to be perfect, but you HAVE TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. This will be collected for a grade.

3. England 1700 (2 slides) Draw a rural village in England in 1700:
Draw a river across your paper connecting east to west: the river should be about 1.5 inches wide
Draw 2 roads: one running north to south and crossing the river at the bridge, one running east to west. Neither have to be a straight line. They should be about 1/2 inch wide

5. Fast Forward to 1745
Construct a canal that runs perpendicular to your river. It should be at least half inch wide.
Also, build yourself a nice home somewhere on the map since you are now rich!

For a variety of reasons (soap, diet, sanitation, Enclosure Acts, etc), there is a population explosion in England, and your village.

Richard Arkwright invents the water frame which is 100 times faster than a single person. The Water Frame needs a water source and so it must be built in a factory along a river.

Factory is expanding and needs workers. Many poor peasants move to this village to work in the factory.

The Textile factory has brought in huge profits. The owners invest in more factories.

Unemployed from surrounding areas begin flocking to your village looking for work.

11. 1783
Although workers barely eke out a marginal existence, a few families live in luxury. These are mostly the large landowning families and factory owners.
Add 2 estate homes for these people – you may remove trees for these homes if necessary

1785 (2 slides)
James Watt invents the steam engine. This is more efficient and can be built anywhere (it doesn’t need a water source). At this point you may need to remove trees to continue expansion.

1820
Steam engine is applied to transportation creating the first steam locomotives.
Add 1 major railroad line connecting all your factories to your coal mines. It must be one continuous track which must connect all factories and mines. You can build additional bridges if needed.

Women and children are paid less than men and for this reason are more likely to be hired. This leaves many men with no job. Depressed, ashamed, and angry, some of these men turn to crime and the social life of the pub.

1835
Iron smelters used coke (a by-product of coal) to improve the iron smelting process. Soon they learned that the gases released during the coke making process produced light. This was then piped in to burn in street lights.

Two major factories are textile and steel. Working conditions in both are appalling. Diseases such as white lung disease: lung ailments such as cancer, tuberculosis, emphysema, etc. Other were injured on the job. There were no protections in any of the factories.
