Structure of the united states government

Overall Structure The government system in the US is divided into 3 branches of government. Executive Branch Legislative Branch Judicial Branch These three branches of government are COMPLETELY SEPARATE!

Executive Branch PRESIDENT:
He/she is the combination of the head of state and the head of government. Directly elected by voters (CANNOT be a member of the legislative).

Powers of the President
Appoints the Cabinet (enforces and administers laws). Does not need the support of the legislative to remain. Can propose legislation to the legislative branch. Veto power of any legislation

Legislative Branch Also known as Congress
Elected directly by the voters. 2 chambers: Upper House (Senate), Represents the regions (2 per state) Lower House (House of Representatives) represents the people.

Senate Powers Initiate legislation and modify or reject legislation passed in the House of Representatives. Presidential appointments with Cabinet, Ambassadors and Judges must be approved by senate. Foreign treaties must be ratified by senate. Has power to IMPEACH the president

House of Representatives
Representation here is based on “Rep By Pop”. Members are elected to a 2-year term, no limit on how long one can serve. Can initiate all legislation. Exclusive right to initiate money bills. Power to elect the President when no candidate receives a majority in the electoral college. Right to IMPEACH the President and other Officials.

Judicial Branch

Judicial Branch cont. It is a decentralized system of courts that extends from the Supreme Court in Washington, to state supreme courts, district courts and local courts. It is used to hear cases of appeal. It sits a tribunal of 9 judges that are Appointed by the President and Approved by the senate.

Differences B/W Canada and USA
ii. The President is the chief of the armed forces, but only Congress (House of Reps. & Senate) can declare war. iii. The President can veto any bill from Congress, but Congress can override the veto with a 2/3 majority. iv. The President appoints the cabinet and supreme court justices, but they must be confirmed by the Congress or else they cannot take office. v.
